Lilly Gordon delivers death to unsuspecting souls, Fate’s decisions carried out with a simple touch. But when a woman is found brutally slain before her destined time to die, Jack, Lilly’s ex-lover and a fellow reaper, is fingered for the crime, the evidence undeniable.
As the only one who’s been close to Jack, Lilly finds herself dragged into the investigation by Lord Mason Archer, chancellor to the reapers. But Lilly and Mason have a past of their own, and the long hours spent in Mason’s company leave Lilly falling for the difficult man who not only infuriates her, but makes her heart race. With the latest victim mutilated beyond recognition, it seems the killings cannot get any more heinous—but there’s more than one force at work, and Lilly soon realizes there are things far worse than death and dismemberment when dealing with Jack the Ripper.
Jack Jack the Grim Ripper A Grim Reaper Romance Book 1 eBook Cali MacKay
I am not a romance book reader and prefer scifi/fantasy. This book is more in line with the latter genre then the former which is why it was recommended to me and why I decided to take a chance, I am glad I did. There are certainly romance themes weaved throughout the book, but the story is more focused on a mystery in the paranormal world then on the romance. I read this book very quickly as I was very engaged in the story. It did a great job of keeping you interested throughout the book. The characters were extremely relatable and well developed, although I agree with one of the other reviewers, there were many times I wanted to slap Lilly myself.
The only real critique would be that it would have been interesting to understand more about the paranormal world they live in, more development of the Elders, and why its there, who runs it, etc..although I will admit it is not germain to the story line and would probably have just made it more confusing, but it would have been an interesting arc in the story.
In the end a great book that has real history and good story telling.

Jack Jack the Grim Ripper A Grim Reaper Romance Book 1 eBook Cali MacKay Reviews
It's been a while since I've read a book that I couldn't put down. From page one, Calista had me hooked. Characters were complex and real; likable and hated. Feelings of trust, betrayal, fear, and anger drove the characters to each other or in some cases away from each other. I liked the lead female character. Although Lilly seemed fragile and most of the men in her life wanted to protect her, she was also headstrong and determined, yet vulnerable at the same time. She knew what others came to realize about one of the men in her life. I found myself rooting for Mason and Lilly.
I felt it was well-written, suspenseful and tasteful. Two thumbs up!
WOW! I COULD NOT STOP READING, I HAD TO FINISH THIS BOOK IN ONE SITTING!! HAD ME ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT. NEVER KNOWING WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT OR HOW. AND WHO!! LOVED IT!
As amazing as this may seem, Calista Taylor has used an old tale, one that any reader with an interest in crime or suspense or mystery has surely already read and probably more than once. Somehow she has managed to create something different and even though the reader still anticipates the outcome, there is suspense, intrigue, romance and ... at the end, an unexpected twist. Great Era, Great Reading!
Jack is a suspect in a rash of unsolved murders where the women have been grotesquely slashed. Lilly, his former lover, cannot believe that Jack is capable of these crimes. She and other grim reapers work to solve the mystery before the natural Fate timeline is disturbed.
This was a good historical mystery that was spun around the documented Jack the Ripper slayings. There were some repetitive paragraphs, but overall it was an intriguing tale.
Wow! I am a contemporary romance fan but I started out a paranormal romance fan. I love Cali's Mermaid Isle and Highland series and after devouring those books I wanted to read one of her early paranormal books. "Jack" is a twist on the Jack The Ripper killings.
This book had me in emotional turmoil. From lost loves and lives I was conflicted on how I wanted the outcome to unfold. This book was not predictable It made me a nervous wreck and I loved it! LOL. Kudos to Cali for thinking outside the box on this one although I could not sleep until I finished the book.
Until the day before yesterday, I had only ever written a review for a bookshelf. But after reading "The Highlanders Hope" (also by MacKay), I was compelled to share how much I enjoyed it. Immediately after posting that review, I bought the rest of that series and "Jack" - which I DEVOURED! The general concept is certainly intriguing but I feared it might be tough to sustain my interest once I got familiar with the plot. Not so--did I mention I devoured this book? I've read hundreds and hundreds of romances and mysteries which has resulted in being able to anticipate how a book will end (often diminishing the enjoyment factor). No way I could see where this story was going - in fact, I don't remember trying. I just sat back and enjoyed the unique, riveting, hot, spine-chilling ride that was "Jack."
To my great sorrow, I just learned that Elizabeth Peters has passed away...but I may well have found a new favorite author.
but Mason is a worthy hero to read about. Lilly was too stubborn most of the time and always wanted to pick a fight with him, mostly i think because she didnt want to feel anything for him even though hes a good man and i felt she held on too long to her past. Mason kept proving his love for her not only through words but actions yet she always doubted him and try to turn it into something it wasnt which was so frustrating. I really dont see what Mason saw in her as she acted more like a child (and it got annoying she constantly reminding him of his job position like it was a bad thing to do your job - hello he was protecting you despite the risks of him being penalized you ungrateful B!) The twist with the new reaper- I think it was a cheap excuse to face Lilly with her past that was not necessary. Why couldnt the author just let it go? Was this the only way she could think of for Lilly to prove her love to Mason? Well I didnt like it.
I barely saw Jack and I feel more for him than I did to Lilly. Though after reading the prequel, I now have the answer to my questions and like I said it wasnt satisfying ones. I did like the reaper world and the rules and whatnot. I also would have prefer to see the way things started between Lilly and Mason as oppose to have had that part skipped. When was their first kiss? What motivated Mason to kiss her and she to allow it? What were their thought immediately after? I dont know but If i did, I would have enjoyed it more.
The reason I gave this 3 stars is because I enjoyed reading about Mason so much and the only character that kept me reading, though the mystery was a good portion of it too. Overall I was more disappointed in the heroine and a few other elements but for the most part everything else was really good.
